Speeding Up A Slow Computer

Slowness in a computer may be due to a variety of reasons. The most common, however, is software programs as compared hardware. Below is a list of what to look for when diagnosing a slow computer.

Too many programs are running

Computers are well known for multi-tasking. Even though they are capable of doing many tasks at the same time, they can slow down your computer since there are so many programs for the processor to handle. Too many programs will, surely, slow down your computer. You may check your Notification Area to see how many programs are currently running on your system. If you are computer savvy, you can press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC [for the task manager in Windows] and check out what programs are running and end those you are not using.

Intrusion of a Virus into your Computer

If you love to surf online, there is a big chance you are at risk to the viruses, particularly those ever present on the Internet. If you love to download programs online, chances are you are risking your computer from these cyber threats. Aside from this, attachments on emails that once downloaded can also infect your computer because these viruses attach themselves on emails undetected. These are some ways that your computer can be infected by malicious software. Make sure you have an Anti-Virus system up and running and that you update it regularly.

Insufficient RAM

RAM is considered to be your computer’s working space. All the programs that have been, and are being, processed by your computer use the computer’s RAM to perform their tasks. The more RAM you have, the better chances of having a productive output by your computer. If you have too many programs stored on your computer, then it can actually consume a lot of memory. This can result to a slow computer. RAM is upgradeable, if you have less than 500 MB of RAM you should consider upgrading that memory, to speed up your system.

Hard drive

Hard disk drive is considered to be your repository to all of the files and software on your computer system. If there are so many files and programs stored on the hard drive, it can actually slow down your computer. Sluggish performances can be encountered too.

Overloading on startup

Every time you add additional programs on your system, it automatically puts itself as one of the items in the startup list. The more programs on your startup items, the longer will it take to consume just to boot up your system since it will have to download all the items on the Startup list.

Processor

The speed on your computer depends on the processor used. That is why this is to be considered when purchasing a computer. So whatever the processor you have on your computer, you will surely be stuck on it since processor is not usually upgraded. The slower the processor, the slower your computer is.
